Lenovo Legion 7i Gaming Laptop Review
It’s a great gaming laptop like the Asus Strix Scar 17 SE, which is unbeatable, and the MSI Vector GP66, a great deal. The Lenovo Legion 7i, on the other hand, has the qualifications to possibly beat all of them.
Ergonomics, Design, and Features
Lenovo says that its Legion gaming laptops are made to look cool in the office while still being simple enough to blend in, and we tend to agree.
When the RGB lights are turned off, the Lenovo Legion 7i looks like a dark grey business computer with classy details. But if you turn on the lights, you’ll be the envy of every LAN.
The lid is thin and has a Legion logo on the front, lit in different colors in different areas. There are a lot of louder gaming laptop lids out there, but this one still looks pretty cool.
When you open it, you’ll see the same full-size keyboard we’ve seen on older models, with a narrower number pad but still full-size and full-size arrow keys.
Even though the 16-inch chassis is being used, nothing feels too tight. The keys are Lenovo’s lozenge-shaped tiles with low travel and are well-balanced. It’s easy to use and accurate to type on and play games. The Lenovo Legion 7i has a lot of keys, and all of them are fun to press.
The Legion Spectrum RGB lighting is set up for each key, and the Lenovo Vantage PC management app lets you change pre-set patterns or make your own.
A light bar that goes around the keyboard also lights up. The Lenovo Legion 7i is also interesting because it has a tool for replacing key caps and the actuators underneath.
Some gamers might want to change the WASD keys, but this doesn’t give us much hope that the keyboard will last long. Still, we haven’t seen anything that makes us think they won’t last as long as any other competitor.
The trackpad on the Lenovo Legion 7i is smooth and accurate, and the buttons built into it are quiet and easy to use, just like the keyboard.
Above the screen is an array of microphones and a Full HD webcam recording clear audio and video for web conferencing and streaming. The Lenovo Legion 7i has a 16-inch matte IPS screen with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 and a speed of 165Hz.
It shows a pretty accurate Windows Desktop that is bright and clear. It’s very good for multimedia. Both color and black-and-white gradients can have some light banding.
Even though the contrast is usually very good, some details can be lost in areas that are very dark or very bright. Even though the colors aren’t the brightest, they are still very good.
Performance
Intel is what the I in 7i stands for. If it’s not there, the laptop is based on AMD. The powerful Intel Core i9-12900HX CPU inside our Lenovo Legion 7i runs at 3.6–5GHz and has eight Performance cores, eight Efficiency cores, and 24 threads of operation.
The HX at the end of a CPU’s name means it uses more power. In theory, it could be as fast as a desktop.
It has 32GB of DDR5-4800 RAM, and a 1TB NVMe hard drive on either side. Together, they scored 8,686 on the PCMark 10 test for general computing. That’s the fastest score we’ve ever seen, even faster than the huge, well-cooled Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 SE with its stronger CPU and power supply.
The Cinebench CPU-based rendering tests (R15 and R23) scored 3,542 and 19,884, respectively. Both are a bit slower than the MSI Raider GE77 HX, which has better cooling and the same CPU but is slightly faster.
Still, the Lenovo Legion 7i gets 5 stars because it has the fastest 2D performance we’ve seen on this site.
The most powerful 3D performance comes from the Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti, which has a whopping 16GB of GDDR6 RAM. This ensures it can handle things like Far Cry 6’s 12GB HD texture pack.
We gave it our hard 3DMark ray-tracing tests, and it got 3,435 (average 34.4fps) on the new Speed Way test and 8,576 (average 39.7fps) on the Port Roayl test. These scores are only a hair behind the ROG SCAR, which is the best.
In tests that mimicked triple-AAA games, it got an average of 83 frames per second (fps) in Time Spy and 74.2 fps in Fire Strike Extreme. Those scores put them in the second and first place, respectively.
The simple Night Raid test, which looks at cross-platform, casual, and competitive games, got 66,174 (an average of 616.6fps), again just behind the SCAR.
In our new CS: GO tests, the average frame rate was 440fps in the main test, but it dropped to an average of 73fps in the 1% Low test when things got tough. Still has a good score, but not as good as the SCAR, whose extra system power only caused its 1% Low score to drop to 123fps.
The SCAR has a big 330W power supply that can simultaneously give more power to its CPU and GPU. This is why it leaves competitors in the dust. But not very much. The Lenovo Legion 7i is the second fastest gaming laptop, according to its 3D Performance score of 4.6 Stars.
Ports and Connectivity
On the right are a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port, a switch for turning on and off the webcam, and a 3.5mm jack. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports are on the left. At the back are two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, an HDMI 2.1 port, and Gigabit Ethernet.
It’s up to you to decide if the white LED labeling is helpful or a design flaw. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 are built in. Overall, it has everything.
Portability
The Lenovo Legion 7i weighs 2.57KG, which isn’t light but isn’t too bad for a top-of-the-line 16-inch gaming laptop. The thin, 230-Watt power supply and cables add another 0.87KG to the package, which isn’t light but is smaller than most competitors.
In the past, the bottom of the Lenovo Legion 7i got hot and noisy. The 12th Gen model is much better than it used to be.
Even though the thin screen and hinges aren’t the strongest, the build quality is good. We suggest being extra careful as you move it around.
The maximum-size 99.9Wh battery, on the other hand, ran our 3DMark 10 Modern Office test for a very impressive 7 hours and 50 minutes, which is almost a full day away from the office.
Pricing and availability
As we were getting ready to go to press, Lenovo was selling our model of the Lenovo Legion 7i for $5,317, which was a huge discount of 25%. The suggested retail price was $7,089.

The Lenovo Legion 7i is now the best laptop according to us. It’s finished! But certainly not without some last-second arguments. When you look at the RRP, the Lenovo Legion 7i comes in just behind the ROG Strix SCAR. With the current discount, it’s our new Number 1 Best Laptop.
But what sold us on the Lenovo Legion 7i was that it is a great all-arounder that does well at everything. It works just as well at work as it does at a LAN.
On the other hand, the huge SCAR is all about games and has a few flaws that will make it hard for the general public to use. In the end, there aren’t many people who wouldn’t want to own a laptop. So this concludes the topic for Lenovo Legion 7i Gaming Laptop Review.
